LANCASTER, PA - For the month of December 2011, Cape Air carried a total of 1,014 passengers on its Lancaster to Baltimore (BWI Airport) route - an increase in traffic of nearly 20% compared with the number of passengers flown in December 2010.
The significant increase in ridership in December follows an outpouring of support in 2011 from
local residents and elected officials alike, for the continuation of local Lancaster route service via
participation and funding through the federal DOT's Essential Air Service program - which brings
affordable air service to communities otherwise under-served by air carriers.
Since March 2009, Cape Air has provided high-frequency commercial passenger service between Lancaster Airport and Baltimore Washington International-Thurgood Marshall Airport. One way fares start at $49 per person, with free extended parking available at Lancaster.
“We're delighted to play an important and expanding role in meeting the business and leisure travel needs of residents in our local region,” noted Todd Willman, Cape Air's mid-Atlantic regional marketing manager.
“At Cape Air, we see our service as "the smarter alternative" for those who need to get to BWI –
and beyond.”
Willman notes that with the recent relocation and addition of Delta to BWI's Terminal "D" (which also houses Cape Air's gate), the local service allows a faster access for those travelers making connections on Delta, JetBlue, Continental, United and US Airways - because of no need to re-screen at the airport's security checkpoint.
Tickets for Cape Air can be purchased at Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, and by calling Cape Air at (866) CAPE-AIR, where there is never a booking fee to talk directly with an agent.
Now in its 22nd year, Cape Air is one of the largest independent regional airlines in the United States flying almost 700,000 passengers annually. It operates primarily in seven regions of the world, including New England, New York, the Caribbean, Florida and Key West, the Midwest, Micronesia and here in the Mid-Atlantic. With a fleet of 72 aircraft and a team of 850 employees, Cape Air is headquartered in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
Cape Air has ticket and baggage agreements with most major airlines, and is noted for its unique
focus on customer service, known as MOCHA HAGoTDI (‘Make Our Customers Happy and Have
a Good Time Doing It’). This highly customer-centric approach has earned it accolades as "Best
Airline‟ on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The airline is consistently recognized for outstanding philanthropy in the cities and regions it serves, and is a sponsor of numerous community events including last year's popular "Community Days" weekend held in August 2011 at the Lancaster Airport.
